The Lycée Louis Massignon celebrates Franco-German friendship at GISAD

As part of the long-standing partnership between the Lycée Louis Massignon (LLM) and the GERMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ABU DHABI (GISAD), a new meeting rich in history and symbolism took place on 16 January. German-speaking students from the second and first year classes at LLM, accompanied by their teacher Mme Mistrot, took part in this cultural and educational exchange.

The day began under the banner of international cooperation, in the presence of the French ambassador, H.E. Nicolas Niemtchinow, the German ambassador, H.E. Alexander Schönfelder, and the head teachers of the two schools. The meeting marked the anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, signed on 22 January 1963, a historic agreement sealing reconciliation and cooperation between France and Germany after the Second World War.

The official speeches opened the festivities. The headmaster of GISAD reminded the audience of the importance of this event, followed by an inspiring speech by the French ambassador, who emphasised the historical and symbolic significance of the Élysée Treaty. The German ambassador then captivated the audience by sharing personal anecdotes, bringing history alive and accessible to the students. The students had the opportunity to talk directly to the two ambassadors in a warm and interactive atmosphere.

Four GISAD students then gave a bilingual presentation in French and German, tracing the origins and importance of the Élysée Treaty. This performance highlighted the cultural and linguistic richness promoted by the two establishments.

After this first official part, the pupils took part in interactive activities to encourage intercultural exchanges. A Kahoot quiz on the Élysée Treaty was a fun way to deepen their knowledge. Then, in small Franco-German groups, the pupils worked together to design a project for a three-day visit to Berlin, which they presented to their fellow pupils. This workshop, conducted entirely in German, strengthened their language skills, creativity and team spirit.

The morning concluded with rich and promising discussions. But the adventure doesn't stop there. The next stage of this exchange will take place at the Lycée Louis Massignon, where our German-speaking pupils will be welcoming their GISAD counterparts for the 'Mai des Langues'.

These meetings perfectly embody the vision of the LLM: to promote openness, intercultural dialogue and language learning in a unique multicultural setting.

Under the direction of Ms Mistrot, the German classes at LLM play a central role in this dynamic, offering an enriching programme that enables pupils to learn about history and culture, while forging strong links between the generations. A fine demonstration of the Franco-German friendship that continues to flourish, even across borders.
